What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plants and herbs through a process of distillation or cold pressing. Used for centuries to enhance health and well being, natural essential oils are therapeutic both because of their unique healing properties and because their molecular size is small enough to allow them to penetrate the bodily tissues through the skin and olfactory sense.

The chemicals in essential oils give them desirable healing properties that include uses as an antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, or antispasmodic. They are also used as diuretics, vasodilators, or vasoconstrictors according to the individual oil's chemical make-up. Some are calming while others are stimulating. Furthermore, essential oils can act on the endocrine glands, including the adrenals, reproductive glands, and thyroid gland.

Essential oils have been used for healing and perfumes since before Christ, and references to essential oils appear 188 times in the Bible. There they were called precious oils, and the story that comes to most peoples' minds is the one of the Three Wise Men and the Infant Jesus. Interestingly, frankincense is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory to lung, genital and urinary problems. It is used for treating urino-genital tract infections and for the treatment of breast cysts. Mary would have known what to do with it. Likewise, myrrh is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. It has been suggested that Mary may have applied it to the umbilical cord of the tiny baby to prevent infections and speed healing of the navel.

Essential oils have a very high frequency, which is a measurable rate of electricity flow. Rose oil has the highest frequency and is thus considered to be one of the most precious oils. The body also has an electric frequency, and the rate of that frequency can indicate a person's health. Diseases cause a lower frequency, but essential oils can raise the frequency of the body. Thus, essential oils heal on a vibrational level as well.

Because of their therapeutic properties, essential oils are effective for treating infection, enhancing the immune response, balancing the nervous system, and harmonizing moods and  emotions. They can be either energizing or calming, depending on their specific properties and are able to detoxify the body and and aid healing in the tissues and organs.

Many people use essential oils in the art of aromatherapy. According to Jared Held of Simi Valley, CA, when aromatic molecules from essential oils "interact with the top of the nasal cavity, they give off signals that are modified by various biological processes before traveling to the limbic system, which is the emotional switchboard of the brain. There they create impressions associated with previous experiences and emotions. Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and hormone balance, scientists have learned that oil fragrances may be one of the fastest ways to achieve physiological or psychological effects.

"Inhaling the fragrance of certain essential oils can help clear sinuses or free congestion in the chest, as well as alter the neurochemistry of the brain to produce changes in the mental and emotional behavior. Even aromas too subtle to be consciously detected can have significant effects on central nervous system activity, sometimes to the point of cutting in half the amount of time needed to perform a visual search task."

Essential oils are classed by grade. Lower grades are used for laundry detergents and toiletries. Although they have a pleasing fragrance, they are cut with synthetics and toxic solvents. The highest grade is therapeutic. A therapeutic grade oil must use a state-of-the-art distillation process, and it takes much more time to process.

Because an essential oil is classified as Pure does not necessarily mean it is of the highest quality. Pure means the oil hasn't been mixed with another essential oil. However, it may have been mixed with a carrier oil. In the United States, you are only required to have 5% of the essential oil in the bottle to label it Pure.

Natural means the essential oil was not adulterated with vegetable oils, propylene glycol, SD Alcohol 40 or other chemicals.

Complete means the oil was distilled at low heat & low pressure so that all the therapeutic properties are there. However, Complete oils have not been rectified or purified (which means stripped or redistilled.) Essential oils are often redistilled to make a small amount of oil go farther. They can make more profit that way. The problem is, when you redistill the oil you lose the therapeutic properties. It's like using a tea bag over & over again.

The best oils are labeled Genuine, Authentic or Grade A. These oils are distilled from the finest process using steam at low pressure and low temperature and using plants that are grown from seeds that have never been grown from hybrids and in organic soil that has never been treated with chemicals. Many companies will distill at higher temperature for a shorter time, but this destroys the quality of the oil. Grade A oils have the highest vibrations and the greatest healing capacity.

Ancient Wisdom Essential Oils are Grade A oils & meet AFNOR standards.

Raindrop Therapy

Raindrop therapy  blends ten highly therapeutic essential oils into the massage session. These oils are highly antimicrobial, and the effect is quite soothing.  Each oil is dropped and layered in a raindrop fashion on the spine, legs, and feet and  then lightly massaged in.

These restorative oils are absorbed by the body and are within your bloodstream within 20 minutes. The oils stay in the body from five to seven days and are discharged like other nutrients.

Working on the physical and emotional levels, Raindrop Therapy promotes structural and electrical alignment for the body. Many clients report increased energy, alleviation of back pain, and a general sense of clarity after a treatment.  Another benefit of Raindrop Therapy is its ability to boost the immune system due to  the antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties of the oils.

Some Essential Oils and Their Properties

bullet

Rose: Rose has the highest vibration of all essential oils making it one of the most expensive oils. Besides its heavenly fragrance (it is associated with saints like the Virgin Mary, St. Therese of Liseaux, and Mary Magdalene), it is antidepressant, antiseptic, and antispasmodic.

bullet

Lavender: Lavender is a definite for your medicine chest. It relieves tension and irritability and can help induce sleep. I use it in my massage room to relax clients. Additionally, it is analgesic, anticonvulsive, antidepressant, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, decongestant, deodorant, and restorative. Wow!

bullet

Eucalyptus:  Even more than lavender, I love Eucalyptus. Both my dog and I have allergies, so I diffuse it each day to help our breathing and clean the air of irritants. It is analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, decongestant, diuretic, expectorant, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial. It also increases circulation and really helps my migraines. I am never without it.
note: Ancient Wisdom has several species of Eucalyptus. Read the descriptions of each to determine which species is right for your needs. Because I diffuse it, I like Eucalyptus Globulus or Eucalyptus Radiata. I also recommend Ancient Wisdom's Breathe Easy, which has several varieties of Eucalyptus and is great.

bullet

Sandalwood: Sandalwood comes from an evergreen tree that is nearly extinct, and so it it also an expensive oil. Its distinctive woody fragrance is an excellent choice to relieve depression. It can even be used to repel insects! It is antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, tonic, decongestant, insecticide, antifungal, harmonizing, and good for skin conditions and nerve pain.

bullet

Peppermint: Extremely useful for calming the digestion, this is another versatile oil that is a must for the medicine chest. Scientific experiments have proven that it aids concentration and mental accuracy, and students can dab a bit of it on themselves before a test to improve scores. It is an invigorating and stimulating oil that is analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, expectorant, decongestant, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, and antifungal.

bullet

Tea Tree Oil or Melaleuca: I mix an inhalation oil from equal parts of Tea Tree, peppermint, and eucalyptus that is great. Ancient Wisdom calls their oil Melaleuca because this is the name of the shrubby tree from which the oil is distilled (Melaleuca alternifolia). There are other varieties of the oil that are made from different plants. The best tea tree oil comes from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. It is called a tea tree because the Europeans sometimes drank the brew made from steeping its leaves when they couldn't get real tea. The Australian Aborigines use it for a variety of medicinal purposes, and it is an immuno-stimulant that increases the body's ability to fight off any infections. It is effective in reviving the mind and body after shock. It acts as an antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, expectorant, immune stimulant, antiparasitic, anti-infectious, and decongestant.

bullet

Roman Chamomile: Smelling a bit like sweet apples, Roman chamomile is an excellent oil for use with children. In a very diluted form, it can soothe teething, colic and diarrhea in babies. For older children (and adults), it can soothe irritability, throat infections, and stomach upset. It helps to relieve allergies, hay fever, and asthma, and it is good for a variety of skin irritations. Therapeutically, it is analgesic, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, anti-neuralgic, antispasmodic, sedative, digestive, and tonic.
