The Five Reiki Healing Principles

Just for today, I release all worry.

Just for today, I release all anger.

Just for today, I do my work with integrity and honesty.

Just for today, I give thanks for many blessings.

Just for today, I honor every living thing.

- Dr. Mikao Usui

What Is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese healing technique that reduces stress, induces relaxation, and promotes healing. It does this by allowing the client to tap into an unlimited supply of "ki" or "chi", also known as "prana", "ruach", or "life-force." Our unseen life force energy is what causes us to be alive. If our "life force energy" is low or is stuck in our energy channels, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, but if it is high and running freely, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The syllable "rei" does not have a precise translation, but it implies "unity" or "divine oneness'. Thus, the word "reiki" translates from the Japanese as "universal life-energy". This is the unseen energy that flows though all life, and the Reiki practitioner is trained to channel this universal "ki" to the client in a gentle, non-invasive manner to facilitate relaxation, stress-reduction, and immune system strengthening and to increase vitality and self-healing. it is considered to be an energy modality and is administered by the "laying-on of hands".

More specifically, the term Reiki refers to the technique of healing developed by Mikao Usui in Japan during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and all Reiki practitioners ultimately trace their lineage back to Dr. Usui. The technique is not a stagnant healing modality, however, and other Reiki schools and lineages have developed. At Tapestry Life Resources, Usui, Karuna, and Gendai, are used primarily with Seichim, and other forms of Reiki called in when needed. The energies of the different forms have subtle differences, but they are all based on Dr. Usui's initial Reiki technique.

It is impossible to describe exactly what Reiki feels like because the "ki" responds individually to the client based on his/her energy needs. Some describe the sensation as a "radiance" or a "vibration" that seems to flow both through and around. Many feel changes in temperature such a warmth or coolness as Reiki is received. Likewise, a Reiki treatment may stimulate an immediate result, or it may take several hours or even days and may work on all levels of physical, emotional, and mental health. Reiki is simple, natural, and safe. Indeed, it is impossible for Reiki to do harm, and it works effectively with other traditional and alternative therapies. However, no matter what your individual reaction, you'll leave saying a Reiki treatment feels wonderful.

Reiki treats the whole person, including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include improved immune response and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Karuna Reiki

The word "karuna" is Sanskrit in origin and could be translated as "compassionate action". It is the motivating force behind all those who are working to bring peace and to end suffering on the planet, and thus Karuna Reiki is connected to the wisdom of the soul. It has a different feel than Usui Reiki in that it is more definite in quality. It works in the same way that Usui Reiki does, and heals deeply on the cellular level and on an emotional and spiritual level. It was developed by William Rand of the International Center for Reiki Training.

Gendai ReikiHo

Gendai ReikiHo is the system of Reiki now taught by Hiroshi Doi, a famous Reiki Master in Japan. This system of Reiki is said to be the system used by the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai in Japan, but it also includes modern concepts of healing that have come to light since Dr. Usui's death. Some claim it is purer than the Reiki brought to the US by Usui's student, Ms. Hawayo Tataka, who Christianized certain parts of Reiki history to make it more palatable to Westerners in the years after WWII.
